Dear Governor/Minister
It has come to my knowledge that the Group 78 residents are at risk of forced eviction in the very near future. I am very concerned that they will be evicted to an inadequate resettlement, with no clean water, sanitation and sewage services, and with no access to health care.
I urge you to protect Group 78 from forced eviction and to engage in genuine consultation with the community, including on adequate alternative housing with security of tenure and compensation should an eviction be necessary.
I finally call on the government to end all forced evictions as a matter of urgency!
Forced evictions were recognized by the UN Commission on Human Rights to be a gross violation of a range of human rights including the right to adequate housing, which is protected in Article 11 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR). As a state party to the ICESCR and other international treaties, Cambodia has an obligation to stop forced evictions and to protect people from forced evictions.
